ALLAN "AL" MILLS died peacefully at home in Apex, NC,
surrounded by his family on Sept. 12, 2002, after a
courageous battle with leukemia.
He was born in Asheville, North Carolina, March 14, 1931.
His father, W.L. Mills, his mother, Beulah Sisk, a step-
father Elmer Kenney, and a son Robert Bruce Mills pre-
deceased him.
Allan attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Mary-
land and graduated with an Engineering Degree. After a
tour in the Air Force during the Korean War, he joined
Martin Marletta in Baltimore as an engineer. During the
next 15 years he worked on prop driven aircraft, missiles,
Gemini Space Program & reentry vehicles. The next position
was a 4-year career at Bellcomm, Inc. in Washington, DC as
a Member of the Technical Staff working on Apollo & Skylab.
After a transfer to Western Electric's Dallas Works, he
worked on many telecommunication projects and retired from
AT&T as an engineering manager in 1987. After retirement,
he worked as a telecommunications consultant. His hobbies
included golf and WWII aviation history and spending time
with his grandchildren. His primary community activity
was volunteering at Habitat for Humanity that included a
nomination for Volunteer of the Year in Rockwall County,
Texas in 1999. He was a mentor to children in elementary
school and volunteered at his grandchildren's grade school.
He was an active member of Apex United Methodist church.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Norma
J. Mills; a son Richard Mills & wife Rose, a daughter Sharon
Robinson and husband Byron, a daughter Denise Hargrove and
husband David Hargrove, and many grandchildren.
