GEORGE ROBERT JONES, 87, of Mt. Selman, TX,
passed away peacefully Jan. 3, 2024 surrounded
by family.
George was born August 22, 1936 in Marquez, TX to
Thena Mozell Buchanan & Odes Jones. He was the
second oldest son with five siblings; Dewey Earl
Jones, Noel Ray Jones, Lynn Jones, Odes Jones Jr.,
and David Jones. George was Valedictorian of the
Newton High School class of 1954, and enlisted in
the U.S. Air Force upon graduation. During his
time in the service from 1955 to 1957, he traveled
throughout Europe and made many friends and fond
memories that would last a lifetime. Following his
honorable discharge, George married the love of his
life Mary Mack (Menzel) Jones in 1961. He then
attended the University of Texas at Arlington with
a Double Major in Math and Physics, which would
lead to his nearly four decade career as a Systems
Analyst for Western Electric & AT&T. In his retirement
for nearly the last 30 years, George filled his days
with farming, keeping in touch with friends and
relatives, watching old westerns or Star Trek, and
forming close bonds with his grandchildren.
George was well known for being a supportive and
loving son, brother, friend, husband, father, grand-
father and great-grandfather. Only a phone call
away, he was always there to offer a listening ear,
a helping hand, or an impromptu visit with a bushel
of produce from his garden.
He was preceded in death by Mary Mack (Menzel) Jones,
his devoted wife and mother to their three children,
his parents Thena Mozell Buchanan and Odes Jones, as
well as his brothers Lynn Jones, Odes Jones Jr., and
David Jones.
He is survived by his brothers Dewey Earl Jones, and
Noel Ray Jones, sons Paul David Jones, Matthew Elliot
Jones, and Robert Gavin Jones, his grandchildren
Nathaniel David Jones, Logan Mack Jones, Grayson Ryan
Jones, Madeline Tyler Jones, and Griffin Robert Jones,
and his great-grandchild Bryndle Kay Jones.
George was known as “GR” or “Pawpaw” to those closest,
and will be greatly missed by all the people whose
lives he touched. Forever caring, generous & gracious,
the love that GR showed to those around him will
undoubtedly be the lasting impression left in his wake.
